Weaver Carl Stewart’s “wholecloth” is a series of cloth pieces carefully re-woven from culturally significant objects that he has unwoven. With a focus on how textiles play a role in crafting of queer culture and identity, he asks, “Does a cloth made from recycled denim jeans embody the spirit of rebellion, transgression and sexual liberation or simply how we feel when we pull on a pair of great fitting blue jeans?”
This is a call for one UBC student or alum to make a garment from “jean cloth 01,” woven by @carlstewart_weaver from deconstructed Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans. Look at the wholecloth series on Stewart’s site at https://carlstewart.ca, then apply by January 9, telling us what you’d like to make from this light and drapey fabric.
The co-creation will be exhibited in the Slow Fashion Lab exhibition opening February 25, and later the Slow Fashion Show on March 12.
